For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.

When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink and many go hungry. Fei’s home, the people she loves, and her entire existence is plunged into crisis, under threat of darkness and starvation.

But soon Fei is awoken in the night by a searing noise, and sound becomes her weapon.

Richelle Mead takes readers on a triumphant journey from the peak of Fei’s jagged mountain village to the valley of Beiguo, where a startling truth and an unlikely romance will change her life forever....

When I first heard of this book I was SO excited to get my hands on it. Sadly, though, this book did not live up to its hype or my expectations. Soundless lacks in too many areas for me to appreciate it. The characters in this book have no depth to them, there's no world building, and there are too many vague and unexplained things in this story. For a book that's supposed to be a "fantasy steeped in Chinese folklore" there isn't much in it besides the characters names and a Chinese mythical creature ( which really only comes about at the end) to support that claim. Even the romance and adventure fall flat for me. This is very much a " surface " book; I feel Richelle Mead could have done so much more, so much better than this. This is the first book that I've read from this author and while I've heard great things about her Vampire Academy and Bloodline series I'm not sure if I would buy another book of hers again. I am rating this book 3 stars because I love the idea of this story, its so unique. The story itself would be wonderful too if it wasn't lacking in so much detail and body. Soundless wasn't a horrible read, just disappointing.
