Pääteemat ovat nationalismi, sodankäynti ja naisten asema. Sankareina tarinassa on borogravialaiset naiset, jotka värväytyvät miehiksi tekeytyneinä armeijaan, joka käy turhaa sotaa naapurivaltoja vastaan. Kirjan henkilöt elävät vahvasti uskonnollisen maan ennakkoluulojen ristitulessa. Esimerkiksi mieheksi pukeutuminen on 'Nugganin silmissä kauhistus'.
Tarinassa esiintyy myös aiemmista Kiekkomaailman osista tuttuja hahmoja kuten Sam Vimes ja William de Worde.

A rather enjoyable read, and despite it being within the Discworld the story can easily be read without any prior knowledge. Polly is a lovable protagonist who you will find yourself cheering on from the onset. The supporting cast are all managed greatly, although at times it feels as though some of them fall to the wayside. The ending isn't very predictable but at the same time is not completely out of left field. By far one of my favorite books by Pratchett to date.

Never read a Discworld book before (or after, for that matter), but this one required NO knowledge of it at all. Pretty funny and easy to read. I really liked the gang, although some member might come a little too short and don't get the attention I thought they would deserve ;) Pretty good ending with a nice twist, but in retrospect I'm not sure I was satisfied with it.
