Ich habe das Buch nur wegen Ffordes "The Eyre Affair" gelesen, und fand es für sich alleine genommen ok. Die Handlung an sich ist nachvollziehbar und enthält interessante Wendungen, das Innenleben der Hauptdarstellerin ist sehr farbenprächtig ausgemalt und alle (Haupt-)Figuren haben etwas Tiefe -- wobei man einen gewissen Standesdünkel merkt, der in der damaligen Zeit wohl normal war (zumindest für die Hauptperson/Autorin). Was den Eindruck etwas dämpft ist aber leider die Langatmigkeit, mit der die Handlung voranschreitet (oder eben nur vorankriecht). Viele Stellen sind mir zu stark ausgedehnt oder ganz und gar überflüssig. Ich kann aber sehr empfehlen, das Buch als "Vorbereitung" von "The Eyre Affair" zu lesen.
