Endovelico

There's high chances you, like me, stumbled upon this book while searching for a worthy spiritual sequel to 'The Bridge over the Drina'... Well, while nearly not as epic in scale and scope it it's still a great book with fantastic writing and many of the elements that made many of us so dearly love Ivos' Magnum opus. Spanning pre-annexation Bosnia through post world war I Serbia, this work is assertively gogolesque while still carrying vintage Andric story telling and immersion. It's more of a traditional narrative, in the sense that it is centered on one protagonist but nonetheless it still manages to create an atmosphere soaked of Balkan turmoil even as the protagonist, herself, tries to distance herself from it (i'll just leave it at that). The characterization is absolutely amazing, even for the most secondary of characters; and the narrative itself ends up dwelving, with sucess, in mystery and adventure. All in all, it's not a magnificent force like 'The Bridge...' but it's still a brilliantly written work awash with historical ambience, political fervor and social strife, that will not disappoint the fans.
