In 1144, a curse descends upon the people of the Broceliande forest: children disappear, others die mysteriously. The man the villagers blame is the lord of the region, rumoured to dabble in black magic. To prevent the fear and anger of his people rising against him, he must act quickly to prove his innocence. He calls upon Chevalier Galeran de Lesneven, who fought with him in the Crusades and whose life he once saved. Galeran tries to uncover the truth behind these inexplicable and appalling events, but is thwarted by his patron's cohorts and the fierce feud between his sons.
