The CD-ROM contains cancer incidence data from around 200 population-based cancer registries world-wide for the period 1953-1997 that were published in the eight volumes of the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) series. The data are stored in the traditional form of number of cases by sex, five-year age group, and cancer (no individual records). They are recorded as text files in Comma-Separated-Value (CSV) format and can easily be incorporated into statistical packages for further analysis. The detailed description of the cancer (including morphological sub-types) and the registry dictionaries are provided in the leaflet together with the file layout.

In addition, the CD-ROM contains two Windows-based software programs with basic tabulation and graphic capabilities. Using these programs, summary rates (crude, age-standardized and cumulative) can be calculated over any chosen age-range. They also permit aggregation of both cancer sites and populations.
