Le Fléau est un roman d'horreur de Stephen King publié à l'origine en 1978 mais qui a fait l'objet d'une réédition en 1990, Stephen King y incluant de nombreux passages qui avaient été supprimés par l'éditeur lors de la première version et modifiant également plusieurs références culturelles pour les réactualiser. Dans ce livre, une pandémie de grippe créée en laboratoire se répand à travers les États-Unis et détruit la plus grande partie de la population. Les survivants vont alors se scinder en deux camps aux buts diamétralement opposés, reproduisant ainsi la lutte éternelle du Bien contre le Mal.
Dans sa version courte, le roman a été nommé au prix World Fantasy du meilleur roman alors que la version longue a été nommée au prix Locus du meilleur roman d'horreur. Des adaptations en téléfilm et en comics en ont été réalisées. Stephen King cite comme principales influences pour son livre l'affaire Patty Hearst et La Terre demeure, roman de George R. Stewart, ainsi que Le Seigneur des anneaux, dont le Fléau est une sorte de pendant post-apocalyptique.

This rating is for the "Complete and Uncut" (can we just start revering to these editions as the "Uncircumcised editions"?). I thought the book was a little too long, and showcased King's number one flaw: lingering on useless points for too long that end up not going anywhere. I actually managed to find a copy of the first original edition (only 800 pages!) at Powell's last year, so I'm going to read that one at the same time as the Uncircumcised edition and see how much is different.

I was very engaged for the first 2/3 of the story, but like most King books I've read, the main issue with this one is that it ends up dragging on far past the point where it should have ended and the ending was really weak anyway.
